About Library

The Library is well equipped with modem facilities and resources (print and electronic) in the forms of CDROMs, DVD-ROM, online databases, micro-documents, video cassettes, books, journals, patents, standards, theses, reports, etc. It has also developed a full-fledged Digital Library equipped with necessary modem equipment in order to provide various digital mode Library services. Digital Library section of the Central Library has developed an institutional digital repository using open source software DSpace, which preserve the institute's intellectual output for campus wide access and digital preservation for the posterity.

Central Library Timing: The Central Library of IIT Kharagpur is kept open from 8 am to 12 midnight on all the week days and week-end days, except Institute holidays. Library Collection (print and e-resources): The Library is having a collection of more than 3.5 Lakh documents, subscribing about 300 print journals, and providing access to over 25,000 online full- text journals and several abstracting databases. Besides, there are 1,35,000 e-books. The collection consists of Books, Back-volumes of Periodicals, Theses, Conference Proceedings, Standards, Reports, Microforms, and CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Databases and Audiovisual materials. The Library has two buildings, the Main Building and the Annex Building. Books, Theses and Standards are kept in the Main Building. Current Periodicals, Bound Journals, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Databases and lecture of various video courses are kept in the Annexe Building

One can come using either Steel Staircase or Lift. The Acquisition Section collects requests for books from the faculty, interacts and places orders with the selected suppliers, accessioned the procured books and transfers them to the Technical Processing Section for classification, cataloguing, indexing and database entry.

Circulation section is the gateway between users and documents so it plays a major role to any Library and Information System. IIT Kharagpur Central Library Circulation Section performs issue, renewal, return of books using LibSys software. Apart from these basic task many other jobs like membership registration, issue no-dues certificate, inter library lone, overdue fine collection, book reservation, various e-mail alert generation, etc. and all kind of queries by the users are being performed by this section.

It makes a bridge between the acquisition of documents to the Circulation. The Technical Processing Section of IIT Kharagpur Central Library also plays a vital role to run the functioning of this library services smoothly.

The Current Periodical Section maintains a large collection of over 1100+ journals and periodicals including print and digital versions. Now it is venturing into Open Access Journals. It also has access to various e-journal archives.
